Hello! I’m Matt (a.k.a., MEK Woodworks), a professional box and furniture maker living in Northwest Connecticut. I’ve been making things from wood since I was a kid growing up in Florida. Back then it was tree forts and skateboard ramps and half-pipes. While studying philosophy in graduate school, I started to make furniture, and after working as a college professor for a few years, I took a job at Fine Woodworking magazine. I worked as an editor and photographer, but also wrote articles, co-hosted the magazine’s podcast, and was featured in many instructional videos. I wrote my first book, 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks (The Taunton Press) just before I left the magazine. Since then, I have written two more books: The Art of Kumiko (Blue Hills Press), and Build Better Boxes (Blue Hills Press). I’ve also travelled around the States and overseas to teach woodworking to other folks passionate about this wonderful craft. You can keep an eye on what I’m doing in the shop by following me on Instagram (@mekwoodworks). In addition to making furniture, writing, and teaching, I am a father to two teenage human beings, go for hikes in the woods and mountains of New England, stand in rivers trying to catch trout with a fly rod, and bake a lot of bread (something I started to do when I was 16!).
