This is my version of the disk "hockey" game that was kind of everywhere last Christmas. Each player starts with the same number of play pieces on their side. At the word "GO!" they each use their rubber band to shoot a play piece through the center hole to the opposing side, while the opposing player is doing the same. Both players keep shooting pieces (their own and the other player's) until one of them has a completely empty side. They are the winner.

Materials

1/4" birch plywood, about 16" x 24" for the bottom.

1/2" x 2 1/2" contrasting hardwoods for the side rails and the center and end rails. I used ash for the lighter wood, and Brazillian cherry for the side rails because I happened to have them, but you could use anything.

4 - 1/4" x 1" dowels to old the rubber bands.

3/4" ash and walnut scraps for the round play pieces.

Shaper Origin

table saw

miter saw

Instructions

I used traditional woodworking for much of this project, but used the Shaper for: - Dovetail corners at each of the four corners - round play pieces - center curved square between the two sides - recessed place to hold the dowels which hold the rubber bands I am not going to explain step by step everything, but here is the rough overview: 1) Cut the side rails and center rail to length. I cut them to make the final project 16" x 24". 2) Cut the tails for the dovetails 3) Cut the pins for the dovetails, 4) Cut the recessed place to hold the dowels and rubber bands 5) drill the holes for the rubber bands to go through 6) Use a router table to route a 1/4" rabbet around the entire inside edge to hold the bottom piece of plywood 7) Sand to 220 grit all the rails and bottom plywood piece. 8) Apply a clear coat of finish. (Use masking tape to cover all the surfaces in the dovetailed joints that will need glue. Also tape the edges of the plywood bottom) 9) When dry, lightly sand to 220 grid, and apply another coat of finish. 8) Take off the masking tape, apply glue to the dovetail joints, and the center rail, and assemble them. Wipe off the squeeze-out. Make sure everything is square. clamp as necessary. 9) When the glue is dry, glue the bottom on. Wipe off the squeeze-out 10) Lightly sand to 320 grit, and apply another coat. When dry, buff with butcher paper and buffing pad to desired sheen 11) Use the Shaper with a 1/8" bit to make the circles in the middle of the play pieces. Once they are all done, use the Shaper to cut out all the play pieces. Lightly sand and spray with clear finish, sanding between coats. 12) to put the rubber bands in their places, I used a piece of coat hanger to make a hook at one end, and a handle at the other. Hold the dowel and rubber band in their place on one side, then feed the rubber band through the hole. Feed the coat hanger through the hole on the opposite side, and snag the rubber band. Then pull the rubber band through the hole on the opposite side, and use insert the dowel through the rubber band to hold it in place.
