Materials

8" by 10" (3/4" thikcness) Maple cutting board

1/4" thickness Walnut for the insert.

Tools

1/4" and 1/8" cutters

16mm clearing router bit

Instructions

I made the templates to fit the 1/8" router bit. I chose to use the same wood for all the inserts. But it is possible to use a contrasting wood for the center inlay piece. Work on two working plans. Cutting board : I started the pocket on the cutting board with the clearing router bit. I switched to the 1/4" to finish the pocket. The first pass of the interior cut and exterior cuts around the windows were made with the 1/4" cutter with a positive offset (0.2mm). I finished the interior pass with the 1/8" cutter with 2 passes at 0.2mm offset and a third pass with no offset. Finally, I did a final fitting pass with a negative -0.01mm offset. Regarding the depth of the pocket, you may add 0.01 mm for the glue. Inserts : I cut the inlays on the Workstation using the 1/8" cutter bit with 2 passes with 0.1mm offset and the final pass with no offset.
