Shaper Origin
Shaper workstation
¼” uncut spiral bit
Router or router table
⅜” roundover bit
Start with the frame: 1. fasten blank to spoilboard using double sided tape. Make sure it is face side down as you will make all cuts from the back. 2. Create scan 3 . Make grid set anchor at x=0,y=0 lower left hand corner. 4. Load frame pattern in SO. and place with tenon on left side. 5. Cut the inner most circle, I do the cut in 3 passes increasing depth ¼” each pass. 6 using the 1/4” spiral up cut bit cut 3/8” deep rabbet around inside for photo, glass, and backing. I do this in two passes, first pass at .25” second pass at .375”. (Note: I find that if I do an offset cut at .01 for earlier passes and finish wit 0 offset I get a clean smooth surface.) Cut out the shape of the frame using an outside cut, three passes increasing .25” each pass until ring is free. Set aside. Base: 1. I use the shaper workstation for the remaining cuts. 2. Fasten the base blank to the workstation with double sided tape. 3 scan and create grid. 4 anchor the base pattern on the blank ensuring that the entire base is on the blank. 5 measure your candle cups, . made sure to only cut the cup holder pockets to about .015 larger than the cup diameter. I used pocket cuts down to .60” for each candle cup pocket. 6 cut the mortise for the frame tenon. I did inside cuts to a 0” offset. 7 cut out the base shape using an outside cut around outer shape. Frame tenon I used the workstation to support the frame with the tenon stub up at the cut surface. By using the pins on the left side of the workstation vertical support and ensuring that the tenon blank is squared against the workstation bar I was able to clamp the frame into a position where I could make the tenon using the SO. If I were going to make more of these I would create a support to ensure that the oval frame repeatedly referenced the same point. I created the tenon shape on tool using the rectangle shape. I measured the mortise in the frame using calipers and made my x/y dimensions .005 smaller than my measurements. I also made sure to use a ⅛” radius in the corners. Complete the cut in 3 passes. Inner ring I noticed that some pictures needed a matt because they didn’t quite fill the frame. I milled up some ⅛” thick stock of contrasting material to use as a matt. Option would be to use regular photo matt cut to the same shape.
