Instructions

Instructions for making a Walnut chessboard with a wooden inlay of Ash: To create puzzle pieces from Ash: 1. Begin by milling and cutting board(s) to size. I's easier if you use a couple of small boards, board thickness 4 mm. 2. Proceed to cut out all the puzzle pieces. I used the Shaper Workstation. With the CUT TYPE: "Outside". To make the base from Walnut: 1. Begin by milling and cutting a board to size. Board size: length: 40 cm, width: 40 cm and thickness: 3.5 cm. 2. Pocket out all the puzzle pieces, ensuring a depth of 3 mm. Start pocketing using a bigger size cutter, for example, an 8 mm cutter and use a 3 mm cutter for the final pocketing operation. 4. Use a 3 mm cutter with the CUT TYPE: "Inside" for the final pass to cut the fine details and use a negative (-) 0.1 mm offset, otherwise the puzzle pieces won't fit. 3. Because of the geometry (a round bit can't cut an inner square) use a sharp chisel to make 90-degree corners. Make sure you don't move the shaper tape while chiseling, if needed, you can still adjust the offset. Make sure you try at least a couple of puzzle pieces to ensure a good fit. To Assemble the Puzzle: 1. Once you are satisfied, glue the puzzle pieces in place. 2. Sand everything flush. Finishing: 1. At this point, cut the engraving and proceed to fill it with epoxy. 2. Sand everything flush. 3. Lastly, apply the finish. Youtube Short, the making of the chessboard with puzzle inlay: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0XBf8KL1l50
