Board thickness gauge card that I made with Shaper Origin (designed in Affinity Designer). I keep this at my jointer/thickness planer station so I don't have to keep messing with my calipers. Gauge has my most common thicknesses.
1/4" MDF (the card is 3 1/4" x 2 1/4", so you'll need at least this much)
- Shaper Origin
- Engraving Bit
- 1/8" Bit
1. Secure MDF to spoil board with double-sided tape (be sure it's secure as it is a cut-out) and use ShaperTape as necessary. Scan workspace, import SVG file, and place it on your work piece.
Note: I've decreased my plunge speed to 5 (15 is the default) and pretty much left it there. 15 is too fast, especially for hardwood.
2. Using ENGRAVING BIT, I engraved the text with the following settings:
- SPINDLE SPEED: 6
- DEPTH: 0.015"
- ON LINE Cut*
- OFFSET: 0
*Note: I added a gray stroke to the text in Affinity Designer, which should indicate to Origin that it's an "on line cut". However, when I hover Origin over the text it's defaulted to "inside cut", and I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's something in the export process where Affinity changes text to vectors. Anyway, I had to change each character to "on line cut" in order to be able to engrave the small text.
3. Using 1/8" BIT (I use a downcut spiral... if you don't have one, the included upcut spiral will work but you'll have to clean it up a bit), I cut out the carabiner hole and main shape using the following settings:
CARABINER HOLE:
- INSIDE Cut
- SPINDLE SPEED: 5
- DEPTH: 0.26"
- OFFSET: 0
MAIN SHAPE:
- OUTSIDE Cut
- SPINDLE SPEED: 5
PASS 1:
- DEPTH: 0.125"
- OFFSET: 0.05
PASS 2:
- DEPTH: 0.2"
- OFFSET: 0.05
PASS 3:
- DEPTH: 0.26" (you should be through the 1/4" MDF now)
- OFFSET: 0.02
PASS 4:
- DEPTH: 0.26"
- OFFSET: 0
