A bench hook is both simple and useful. Adding an engraved ruler to the fence takes only a little extra time.

You probably don't need instructions, but here goes. I used plywood but solid wood ought to work too. For the face engraving, grid off the lower right corner, and, using that corner as an anchor, place the fence top file at 0,0. Engrave the face. Rotate the piece 90 degrees, grid again off the lower right corner, and, again using that corner as an anchor, place the fence edge file at 0,0 for the edge engraving. The engravings on the fence and edge ought to line up, and even if your fence isn't exactly 5.25 inches, the ruler ought to be accurate. Align the fence to the upper and left edges of the base and attach with glue and a couple nails. Align the hook with the bottom edge and attach with glue and a couple nails.
