A super-simple project to make 'trays' for burning incense sticks and coils and collecting the ash. It was a good project to use up surplus material. You'll need some holders to safely burn incense coils but there is plenty of choice online.

Incense Tray v2.svg
Incense Tray.afdesign
I used 18mm pine board firstly because I had some surplus and secondly because the trays are for a friend who likes decorating pieces with pyrography and wood dyes. You can use anything you want of course.
Origin (obviously)
Standard 6mm or 1/4" cutter
Cove cutter (optional)
Drill with 1.5mm bit
The position for the coil burner holder is cut with a standard 6mm (1/4") cutter using a pocket cut followed by an inside cut. I cut the 22mm diameter pocket to a depth of 6mm but you can vary the dimensions to suit the holder you have in mind. For the incense stick ashtray I used a cove cutter and an inside cut to a depth of 6mm. The type I used was ENT12286 with a shank of 8mm, diameter of 12mm and radius of 6mm but you can adjust the design and use whatever you have or even cut it as a pocket with the standard 6mm cutter. You will need to drill a small hole in the end of the ashtray into which you can push the incense stick. Determine the angle by eye using an incense stick to make sure the ash falls in the groove. For me the angle was about 45 degrees and the hole 1.5mm diameter for a friction fit. Take care not to drill right through. Finally the perimeter is cut with the standard 6mm cutter. I used a 0.2mm offset and four passes to get within 1.5mm of the thickness of the board. I finished with a full-depth cut and no offset to release the trays. I have uploaded the Affinity Designer file so you can change it as required or simply design something similar in the Shaper Labs page if the idea appeals. I will add a picture of the finished items when my friend decorates them.
