The base is walnut and the recesses for the dinosaurs are .025 oversize. This allows the critters to be easily removed since they stand 3/8 inch proud of the walnut surface. I engraved the name of each species inside the recess.

Shaper Origin, palm chisels, router, random orbital sander
Cut out the critters first and carve features using v-groove palm chisel. Place the recesses on the walnut and cut them .025 inches oversize. Make sure the recesses leave 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the critter standing proud of the walnut surface. Engrave the names of the dinosaurs into the recesses. Shape the walnut base to your liking.
