Engraving Hack: taking the V bit to a new level

Just got my SO. It is awesome, love it, but let's face it: engraving needs a big boost in development. I thought I would share a cheat that I haven't seen on the board. This workaround allows SO to outline type or closed shapes to yield sharp corners and crisp outlines. It doesn't quite match what can be done with software+ machines capable of ramping cuts but gives visual effect way beyond the valley of centerline engraving.

Instructions

After mounting and z-touching a v-bit you will lie to SO and tell it has a small end mill loaded. 1. Install and z-touch a v-bit but do NOT choose engrave in the presets 2. Refer to the diagram and choose depth and corresponding cutter diameter to input in the UI. 3. Cut inside or outside profiles in the same manner as using a standard end mill 4. Experiment with depth The last photo shows cuts at 1mm and 2mm depth when you change the virtual cutter diameter there is no need to re-z-touch
