Simple Folding Case to hold a Lie-Nielson Honing guide, a few jaws, and a Richard Kell Bevel Guide. I made this one from Padauk Scrap I had from a previous project, and it amazing, the fit is great and the weight of the case and tools feels right.

Instructions

Layout Positioning: --------------------------- Import the HoningGuide.svg into your workspace and position it 1/2 away from 2 edges of the board. Using a Grid with will help with alignment. Then import the file again but before placing it you will need to reverse it to have the matching piece for the lid. After importing the file, select scale, then unlink the dimensions and make the width negative to reverse it. Place the reversed image at least 1/2" away from the other design. Cutting the Recesses: ---------------------------- You can cut the recesses in any order you want, there is enough material to continue to support Origin after they are all cut. - Bevel Guide Start by pocketing out the bottom of the case to .04". Then switch to an inside cut with .01" offset at the same depth. Then set offset to 0 and cut again. Make sure to test the fit to see that the bevel guide fits properly. Now set the depth to .06 and make an inside cut along the bottom of the circle (kind of like a smile ). This will allow you to push down on the bottom of the bevel guide and it will pop up to make it easy to grab. Cut the top by pocketing to a .03 depth and folowing with inside cut in the same way you did the bottom. (note no need to add the .06" 'smile' as to you wont be picking it up from the top lid. - Honing Guide: For the bottom pocket to a depth of .45" (i went in 1/8" passes but will depend on the material you are using) then switch to an inside cut and offset of .02 at the same depth. After that pass set the offset to 0 and make another pass. Test fit the honing guide as needed and adjust with offsets until it fits nicely. Then pocket the top to a depth of .4" and repeat the inside cuts at that depth like you did the bottom. - Standard Jaw / Chisel Jaw/Long Jaw: For the bottom pocket to a depth of .3" (i went in 1/8" passes but will depend on the material you are using) then switch to an inside cut and offset of .02 at the same depth. After that pass set the offset to 0 and make another pass. Test fit the jaws as needed and adjust with offsets until it fits nicely. Then pocket the top to a depth of .25" and repeat the inside cuts at that depth like you did the bottom. - Mortice Chisel Jaw: For the bottom pocket to a depth of .45" (i went in 1/8" passes but will depend on the material you are using) then switch to an inside cut and offset of .02 at the same depth. After that pass set the offset to 0 and make another pass. Test fit the honing guide as needed and adjust with offsets until it fits nicely. Then pocket the top to a depth of .35" and repeat the inside cuts at that depth like you did the bottom. - Cutting the outside perimeter: Here you want to cut all the way through the material into the waste board below. Again i went in 1/8" passes at a .02 offset outside cut until i reached a depth of .72 on both the top and bottom. (I didn't want one to pop out before the other was also cut to to the same place.) Then set the offset to 0 and dit an other pass at .72". from there I lowered the depth to .76 and did another pass. It was still slightly connected so i had to do one final pass at .78" to cut out the shape completely. - Barrel Hinges: Using a helix cut, cut to a depth slightly lower than the height of the one side of the barrel hinge, in my case I went to a depth of .36". Also test fit the hinges to make sure they are snug but not so tight you cant remove them. I had to increase the offset to a -.01" but be sure to test fit your exact hinge to see what you need. Sanding and Finishing: -------------------------- To ensure the sides of the top and bottom matched completely use the two barrel as registration points to align the two halves. Then sand through the grits from 100-180 to get all the sides to line up exactly and to smooth all the faces. Also at this point try opening the case, and check the fit/gap of the two halves when opened. Adjust the gap be sanding/planing away the tighter area. For the finish I used some home made Katz-Moses Goo, video for reference on how to make your own: https://youtu.be/VivrbSKNyjY. (It's a simple mix of beeswax and mineral oil) Holds the following items: ------------------------------ - Lie-Nielson Honing Guide - https://www.lie-nielsen.com/products/honing-guide-bladesstandard - Chisel Jaw Pair - https://www.lie-nielsen.com/products/bevel-edge-chisel-honing-guide-jaw-pair - Long Jaw Pair - https://www.lie-nielsen.com/products/long-honing-guide-jaw-pair - Mortice Chisel Jaw Pair - https://www.lie-nielsen.com/products/mortise-chisel-honing-guide-jaw - Richard Kell Bevel Guide - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CER0MK/ Community Project Page: coming soon!
