I was challenged to make a woodcraft version of 2 line drawings of butterflies. Traced them in AD2 and exported the SVG files to my Origin and made a mix of inlays and engravings. The boards are used as lids for boxes, made using the on-tool box joint app and rectangles for grooves and rabbets. Maple and purpleheart provide a nice color contrast.

Boards: Maple 300x200x8 mm, Purpleheart 240x210x8mm
Inlays : Scrap pieces, 3-5mm thick, sliced on my bandsaw.
Shaper Origin, Workstation and tape board.
Router bits ¼”, 1/8”, 1/16” and a 0.8 mm bit for some tight inside corners.
The pictures scales were slightly modified on tool to fit the actual board sizes. I used Workstation to cut the positive inlay pieces and a tape board for the main boards, each with their own Workspace. After cutting 5-10 inlay pieces I cut the corresponding negatives and fitted the inlay pieces. This made it easier to keep track of the parts. The Workstation allowed me to use scrap pieces of inlay wood and adjust for some difference in thickness of the scraps. I found that the smallest inlay pieces were difficult to handle and I used a positive offset of 1 mm to increase their sizes. To avoid “losing” the small parts where they might have insufficient tape at the back, I switched off the dust collector, cut half the circumference of the inlay piece, fixed this with blue painter tape over the top and then cut the remainder. The tape did keep the pieces where they did not have full tape in the back.
