This project is based on an internet picture that was somewhat skewed. After I traced it in Affinity Designer I had to move the outside edges to make the model square. The result is that the internal parts are not exactly symmetrical. The curved inlay strips therefore slightly differ and the 4 included SVG files have the individual pieces for the 4 quadrants of the piece.

Materials

Maple board 250x250X20mm

Scrap pieces walnut 5mm thick

Green latex paint

Minwax Wipe-on Poly

Tools

1/4" upcut bit for the full thickness cuts. All final passes with an 1/8" upcut bit to get tighter curves.

1/2" Uxcell bottom cleaning bit for most of the pocketing. Final pocket passes with 1/4" and 1/8" upcut bits.

Instructions

I made all through cuts with 1/4" bit with 1/8" bit for the finishing pass (for tighter internal curves). The pockets were made with a 1/2" bottom cleaning bit to speed up the task and the edges finished with 1/4" and 1/8" bits. Next the perimeter cut was made with 1/4" and 1/8" bits. The 5mm thick curved walnut inlay pieces were cut using an 1/8" bit and glued in the pockets with wood glue. The straight pieces were cut on the bandsaw, cut and sanded to length and glued in place. After a first layer of poly to seal all surfaces, the remaining pocket areas were painted with 2 layers of green latex paint. Finally 4 more layers of wipe-on poly were applied with steel wool (#00) sanding before the final layer. @DavidMtp has made a parametric Fusion version of this design and describes the file in the Community Section (item Celtic Ornament).
