- 3/8 inch (11/32) plywood (box store) 2ft x 2 ft
- double-side tape
- Shaper Origin
- 1/8 upcut shaper bit
Setup shaper with 1/8 inch upcut bit. Tape down your 3/8 inch plywood, and import this svg. Z-touch your bit. I use double sideded tape, and cut in this order: 1. 0.35 inch deep cut the center holes for the screws 2. 0.21 inch deep cut the ring around holes 3. 0.35 inch deep cut the outline of the zero clearance insert. For the final border cut, I use "auto" when near corners or the side cuts, but for the long straight parts it's easier to NOT use auto mode (just don't hold the right button down) Adjust your 0.35 inch depth as needed to cut through. NOTE: I've had 3/8 inch ply that is perfect thickness, and some that's maybe 1/32 inch proud of the miter saw bed. So you may want to either measure it to make sure it's 0.35 or less, use hardwood that you plane to exactly .35, or maybe sand it down before screwing it to the saw. Another option is 1/4 inch ply (which has better face options) and plastic washers below to get perfect height. That's what I'm going to use next time. UPDATE: I added the tiny side cuts to allow you to just lay it in place. My saw back guides cover the insert space just a tiny bit. UPDATE 2: I decided to use the bandsaw to thin down my very slightly proud insert. If you have a bandsaw and the right push grips for safety, it worked well.
