The pocket in the file is just a little smaller than the actual remote, so that you can use the Offset option to sneak up on the fit. However, I make ours to fit the rubber case that we use with our remotes, which helps to keep the remote more secure than just pocketing the remote by itself. The pocket is about 3/8" deep for the remote alone and with the case we use I go 1/2" deep. I finish it off with a round-over bit at the router table, just to smooth the outside edges.
