Faced with the challenge to make a set of oval legs 5x7”, 12” tall I used Shaper origin to cut the shape at the top and bottom of a block of wood. This was followed by using a tall pattern bit to copy the ellipse up the block of wood and finally use a hand plane to remove the material left in the center. Show how technology and traditional methods can contribute to a difficult project.

8/4 poplar glued up to give 5 1/8 by 7 1/8 by 12” leg blanks
Shaper Origin
Table saw to remove corners with the blade tilted at an appropriate angle
Router table with a tall pattern bit (caution advise)
Number 2 hand plane
Festool 5” sander
I have attempted to remove the excess wood by using a mortising bit in the router table. I made two oval rings that fitted the ovals at the end of the block with the Shaper Origin and such could hold the block at an exact distance from the mortising bit. This should have worked but I chose the safer route of using a hand plane Note: I including the file of an ellipse smaller than this project
