Instructions

Selecting your materials

Butterfly inlays are mainly used to stabilize a split in the end of a solid wood board, but can also be used to cover up knot holes and other imperfections.

For this project you will need 2 pieces of material: a piece of solid wood with a split end, in which your butterfly will be inlayed, and a stock piece that the butterfly will be cut from.

We recommend selecting stock material that is at least ¼” (.25in) thinner than your split material.

Once you have selected your materials, measure the exact of depth of the stock piece with calipers or a tape measure. You will use this measurement to create a pocket with appropriate depth.
