Very simple project my son and I knocked out for some family members who enjoy the sound of vinyl records. We made a 'now playing' stand to show the album currently playing.

Instructions

This is a very simple project. You could use plywood or hardwood. We chose walnut. SVG is attached. Rough Work: Rough walnut stock was cut to 6 x 24". We started by routing the 1/2" x 1/4" dado for holding the record album in the full length of wood on the router table. You could also cut it with the Shaper Origin as an alternative. Brass Inserts: The brass inserts (see image attached) were lathe turned out of 3/8" brass stock and step-turned to a large dimension of 3/8" with a 1/8" step down and a small external dimension of 1/4". These were through-bored with a 3/16" bit on the lathe. They are epoxied into the walnut. Brass Uprights: We marked the brass upright at 6" from each end and bent it to 90 degree angles in the vise to create the harp-shaped upright brass piece. I recommend polishing the brass in your drill before bending to make it easy. Also use wooden blocks to prevent damaging the finish from the vise jaws. Tip - I recommend you bend the brass first in the event the dimensions move with the bending so that it properly fits the holes for square alignment. Cutting the base: The walnut shape and insert holes were all cut with a 1/4" uncut bit (standard Shaper bit) with 1/4" step downs for the outside cuts to complete the base shape. The holes were all cut with the Helix cut to the dimensions outlined in the SVG and the insert drawing. Finish holed depth was 1/8" for the 3/8" hole and 1/2" for the 1/4" holes. The inserts were epoxied after all the cuts were completed. We chose to finish sand after the inserts were in place, but you could choose to insert them after you do the finishing. Finishing: Finish sanded to 4000 grit and applied a wax finish. You could also spray with a poly or lacquer finish or a wipe-on finish of your choice.
