Veneer ( laminated )
1/8" brass rod ( optional )
Origin
1/8" stock cutter
file ( for brass )
hacksaw
small vice
Arbor press ( optional )
Dremel with an abrasive cutoff disk for trimming the brass rods
Start by gluing up some veneer to form your own luxury plywood using whatever wood suits. Alternate the direction of the grain by 90 degrees per layer, clamp between a robust flat surface and leave overnight. I used 3 layers of veneer for my panels, it created a cavity wide enough to accommodate one thick card, and sturdy enough to work with. Double sided tape the the project veneer panel down. Then cut the top ( holes and any customization first ) The bottom_mid file contains the geometry for cutting both the bottom and the mid profiles. Measure your stack of ply, and cut the 1/8" brass to be slightly longer ( it will be trimmed after assembly ) With each brass rod, file one end flat with a tiny chamfer to enable it to push into the 1/8" hole Get all the brass elements ready near the arbor press, then quickly glue up the wood and carefully press the rods into the aligned holes, apply clamping pressure around the perimeter then leave over night. Trim excess brass with the dremel, Sand and finish the result. Gift to a friend, claiming it took an eternity to make. Room for improvement: The design could use a card retaining detail. rubber? leather?
